Read Ohio’s new health orders increasing attendance limits at entertainment venues and banquet centers

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Sports venues and entertainment centers in Ohio can reopen at reduced capacity, and a 300-person limit for banquet centers has been lifted if other health rules are followed, under new coronavirus orders issued by Gov. Mike DeWine’s administration.

The new Ohio Department of Health orders took effect at noon on Tuesday, a few days after DeWine publicly announced the policy changes.

Under one of the orders, indoor sports venues, theaters and other entertainment centers can reopen, so long as the number of spectators allowed in isn’t more than 25% of the facility’s capacity and high-efficiency air filters are put into place. In addition, outdoor stadiums and entertainment venues can now reopen up to 30% capacity.

However, spectators at these venues must still wear masks unless eating or drinking and maintain social distancing between unrelated groups of people as a condition of re-opening.

Since August, both indoor and outdoor entertainment venues in Ohio have been allowed to open at 15% capacity, with caps of 1,500 spectators outdoors and 300 indoors. This new order replaces those restrictions.

“People will be able to plan for prom, they’ll be able to plan for graduation. There’s no reason these events can’t occur as long as they follow safety protocols,” DeWine said during last Thursday’s coronavirus briefing.

The other health order issued Tuesday lifts the 300-person limit for banquet centers hosting events such as wedding receptions. Ohio has had the limit in place since last June.

Other limits for wedding receptions remain in place, including that guests must remain seated at all times, food must be served to people at their seats, and masks must be worn except when eating and drinking.
