Zoo Will Reopen as Outdoor Entertainment Venue Restrictions Are Lifted

With Governor Walz lifting some restrictions across the state beginning Saturday, some outdoor entertainment venues are reopening, including the Lake Superior Zoo.

DULUTH, Minn. – With Governor Walz lifting some restrictions across the state beginning Saturday, some outdoor entertainment venues are reopening, including the Lake Superior Zoo.

During the past four weeks, there was little guest activity at the Lake Superior Zoo, as it was closed because of the governor’s orders but now with new restrictions, the zoo is able to open yet again.

There have been no visitors, but caring for the animals behind the scenes still incurred the same amount of costs, which resulted in a challenging situation for zoo management.

“It was difficult,” said Haley Cope, the CEO of the zoo. “We’re open over the summer and thankfully into the fall. We had both the zoo, and to be closed down again, we have about the same costs as we do when we’re open to the public versus when we’re closed.”

However, Northlanders continued supporting the zoo with memberships and purchasing items at the gift shop to help keep costs down but now that they are able to open, excitement can’t be any higher.

“Thrilled,” said Cope. “We were beyond excited to be able to hear that we would be included in the outdoor entertainment option, to be able to offer that outdoor-only experience here at the zoo.”

And the reopening will also give the public an outside activity to partake in during the pandemic, helping get rid of some of that cabin fever.

“As we come off of this four-week pause, I think a lot of people are looking for something to do,” said Cope. “You can get outside, it looks like it’s going to be at least decent weather, not too cold yet, so it’s important to be able to welcome our community and continue our mission and of course, let people come and see our animals, like our wolves.”

The zoo will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will also be open on weekends only from here on out until there is word about further easing of restrictions.

Currently, the zoo is allowed to have a capacity of 25% with a maximum of 100 people.
