Even though she rose to fame because of her music, Lizzo has increasingly become a fashion pioneer as well. She’s served iconic looks on the red carpet award shows and has been dressed by designers including Marc Jacobs and Valentino. But underneath her extravagant looks, Lizzo is still a casual girl at heart.
Lizzo just made fashion history
Lizzo has been shattering glass ceilings since she first burst onto the music scene. When her hit single “Truth Hurts” hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and remained there for seven weeks, it became the only solo female rap song in history to do so. She ended up sweeping awards this year for her album Cuz I Love You, including wins at the Grammys, BET Awards, and the Soul Train Music Awards.
Lizzo just accomplished another impressive first. She’s on the cover of the October 2020 issue of Vogue magazine, making her the first plus-size Black woman to appear on the cover of the iconic fashion publication.
“The first Black anything feels overdue. But our time has come,” she said in an Instagram post. “To all my Black girls, if someone like you hasn’t done it yet — BE THE FIRST.”

Lizzo has served many red carpet fashion moments
In the span of just over a year, Lizzo has become someone to watch on the red carpet just as much as on the Billboard charts. Marc Jacobs designed showstopping pink camp look from the 2019 Met Gala, and she loved it so much that she wore it to the airport after the ceremony. At the American Music Awards, she wore a tangerine Valentino dress with an accompanying tiny Valentino bag.
Lizzo discussed her music, her fashion, and much more in a video interview with Vogue after her cover shoot. When she’s asked her favorite red carpet look that she’s worn, she’s flustered and struggles to come up with an answer before giving props to Christopher John Rogers for the neon green dress she wore on the red carpet at the 2019 GLAAD Media Awards.
Despite all the things she’s worn, she emphasized that she doesn’t have any fashion regrets.
There’s one fashion trend Lizzo will never give up
Lizzo continued showing viewers through her closet, which was filled with lots of denim and plenty of floral patterns. When asked if there’s a fashion trend she’ll never give up, she had an easy answer.
“High-waisted jeans,” she smiled. “All of my jeans are high-waisted jeans, because my waist is high. I’m a big girl; my waist is up here, it ain’t here.”
When asked if there’s a fashion trend she’ll never give into, she had a similarly straightforward answer.
“Low-waisted jeans,” she laughed. She was then asked if there were any low-waisted jeans in her closet that she owned, and she had one simple response: “Hell no!”
